Watching the Mouth from a Young Age

As a parent, you may be wondering when or how often you should be bringing your child to the dentist. Something we truly believe at Ethical Dental is prevention is better than cure, and this is a driving factor to bring your child to the dentist from an early age to support their overall health as an adult. As well as their health, bringing your kids to the dentist early on ignites positive awareness.

Children’s Oral Health

Even though we are born with no bacteria in our mouth, by the time children start growing teeth by the age of 6 months, bacteria can begin to grow.

From the time kids need to start brushing their teeth, your little one will be developing its own personality. In this, we find kids that might love brushing their teeth, but others that never want to do it, or hate having any help from mum or dad. Finding out how your child feels about brushing their teeth is a great way for us to discuss ways that make sure the child is maintaining a healthy mouth, with no extra fuss.

What Age Should I Bring My Child to the Dentist?

It is very important that your kids see a dentist before they start school. Not only for routine check-ups and to stay on top of their oral health, but to start off a positive experience with the dentist. Bringing your child to a dentist with a positive outlook sets them up for a lifetime of comfortable visits to the dentist.

At a young age, it is very common for falls and accidents that can cause bumps on the mouth. So, a dentist will check for chips in the teeth, discolouration of the gums or the presence of an abscess which can tell us that a tooth is damaged.

Not only is it routine to check for any issues in the mouth, but also to examine how the teeth and bite are developing at a young age. By around age 2, most of the teeth have developed. Some of these baby teeth won’t come out until around 12 years of age, so they have a really significant role in how the adult teeth come through as well as the eventual bite you will have as an adult.

Bringing your child to the dentist from an early age will set the foundation for the future of your child’s oral health. At Ethical Dental, we place great importance in creating a positive environment for your child to encourage long lasting trust in dentists.
