Did you know... We spend around 4.34 years of our life eating?
Eating is a major part of our lives, not only for sustenance and nutrition, but to enjoy different tastes, flavours and conversation with our friends and family.
When you stop and think about it, eating is a really enjoyable part of life! The ability to comfortably chew and enjoy our food is something many of us take for granted. Unfortunately losing teeth, having an uncomfortable denture, or other dental problems can seem inconsequential at first, but can end up having a major personal or social impact for some people.
Our teeth are pretty amazing things. Not only do they help us eat, but they play an important role in our speech, as well as smiling and other our non-verbal communication.
Different teeth perform different roles during eating
Our teeth are shaped differently for a reason. The front teeth (incisors) have thin tips and are perfectly designed to snip or bite through things. Our premolar and molar teeth are larger, and have flatter biting surfaces which are designed to chew and grind our food before swallowing.
Imagine trying to eat a steak, or a crispy veggie patty using only your front teeth!
While most of the time, if someone has lost a few back teeth they can still eat comfortably -- it tends to place more pressure on the other teeth and can lead to increased wear and tear on the front teeth which aren't designed for chewing.
Eating is a major part of our lives, not only for sustenance and nutrition, but to enjoy different tastes, flavours and conversation with our friends and family.
Since eating and enjoying food is such a big part of our culture (not to mention the delicious seafood and produce we have available to us on the Coffs Coast), keeping your teeth and gums in good condition is really important.
Most dental problems can be prevented and this is our main focus, but if teeth have already been damaged or removed there are a number of restoration and replacement options that can help our patients to eat and enjoy food comfortably.
